Globe Number one! occurs as radical environmental defense movement, pioneered in the early 1980s by Arizona desert activists Dave Foreman, Mike Roselle, Howie Wolke, Bart Koehler, and others.

The Early Years

When you took a class action's early years (1980-1986), Globe Number 1! mixed innovative publicity, like rolling the disposables "crack" down Glen Canyon Dam, with far-reaching wilderness proposals that went far beyond what the mainstream environmental groups were unforced to advocate, & by using conservation biology research from the biocentric perspective. A class action's proposals were published around the periodic, Globe Number 1! A Radical Environmental Journal, informally called a Globe 1st! Journal. Edward Abbey's writings were a major inspiration & Abbey himself was revered per early movement, & typically spoke at early Globe Number 1! gatherings. An annual gathering of the class action was referred to as the Spherical Flow of any stream Rendevous, from either either a sentence taken from Aldo Leopold's book A Sand County Almanac.

Late, from either astir 1987 in, Globe Number 1! became primarily associated using direct action to prevent logging, dam building, and more forms of development which may induced destruction of wildlife habitats or the spoilation of untamed site. This vary within counsel attracted numbers of freshly members to Globe 1st!, the bit of of whom come from either a leftist or anarchist political background or involvement in the counterculture. Dave Foreman has related that this led to the introduction of such activities as a "puke-in" at the shopping center, the flag burning, heckling of Edward Abbey at the 1987 Globe 1st! rendevous, & back-&-forth debates in the Globe 1st! Journal in such topics when anarchism, that Foreman & others did non wish to become associated using. Virtually all of the class action's "old guard," including Dave Foreman, Howie Wolke, Bart Koehler, Christopher Manes, George Wuerthner, and Globe 1st! Journal editor John Davis, (but not Mike Roselle) became more & more pinching using this fresh counsel, and yet severed their ties to Globe Foremost! within 1990. Numerous of the two went in to launch the fresh magazine, Wild Earth, and the fresh environmental class action, The Wildlands Project. Rozelle, but then, along by having militant like Judi Bari, welcomed the newly direct-action & left-of-center counsel of Globe Foremost!

Starting in the mid-1980s, Globe 1st! began an increasing promotion of & identification using "Deep Ecology," a philosophy put send on by Arne Næss, Bill Devall, and George Sessions, which holds that all forms of life olympian games st& equal value around and of themselves, while forgoing regard for their utility to mortal beings. Globe 1st!ers utilize this philosophy to justify an the ecocentric view of the world where intrinsical values for parasites & ecosystems outweigh their resource values. A shibboleth of Globe Number one! is "No compromise in defense of Mother Earth!"

Earth First! Since 1990

Since a departure of a old guard inside 1990, action within the Globe Foremost! movement has turn into more and more informed by anarchist political philosophy, with the rotation of the primary media organ among publishers within differing bioregions, an aversion of organized leadership or even administrative structure, & the fresh trend of identifying Globe Foremost! as a movement rather than an organization. Globe 1st! resembles the decentralized, locally-informed activism based on communitarian ethics. The most common theme around recent years has been that "there are no members of Earth First!, only Earth First!ers".

In a field, single citizens & little groups form the nuclei for grassroots political actions, which may require a form of cases--we.e. protests, timber sale appeals, and training campaigns--or even civil disobedience--tree sitting, road blockades, and sabotage - called "ecotage" by some advocates once these are done as a form of ecodefense. Typically, tumultuous direct action is utilized primarily as a stall tactics, to block environmental destruction when lawsuits (which take other period) may assure a long-long-run triumph.

The super popular combination of manoeuvre is traveling blocks, militant locking themselves to heavily devices to immobilize it, tree-sitting to block logging, & every now and again sabotage of machinery.

Although Globe Number 1! was at foremost known for providing trading tools in the Globe 1st! Journal on the practice of tree-spiking, which can be possibly injurious, & monkeywrenching (or ecotage), inside 1990 Judi Bari led Earth Number 1! in the Northern California and Southern Oregon region to renounce these practices, calling them counterproductive to an effort to form the coalition by having workers & little logging businesses to kill heavy-shell corporate logging around Northern California.

Within 1990 the bomb was placed within Judi Bari's car, crippling her, & leading to treacherously charges by constabulary and a Federal Bureau of Investigation that she was responsible for the bomb. Bari died inside 1997, however her federal case against the FBI & Oakl& California police force resulted around a 2002 jury finding of fact exonerating her & awarding her estate and fellow Globe Foremost!er Darryl Cherney a total of $4.4 million. Eighty percent of the damage settlements were awarded for violation of the deuce Globe Number one! leaders' Number 1 Amendment rights to organize politically within defense of the environment. Juror Mary Nunn told newsperson a jury nemine contradicente agreed by having Bari's & Cherney's claims that a FBI & Oakl& Police attempted to frame a pair & falsely smeared the two in the media as a way to neutralize the babies and Globe Number 1! by making a public guess it were terrorists who used bombs. Globe Number 1! has never advocated a utilise of bombs or even explosives in any way, imputable the chance of harming animate thing.

A few critics of the movement however call for EF! activity eco-terrorism, though Earth Foremost! exponent say that a term extra accurately describes a population world health organization kill the epa. Inside response to existence tagged terrorists, occasionally stand adopted a neologism terrist instead.

Globe Number 1! was parodied in the December, 2003 Simpsons episode, "Lisa the Tree-Hugger".
